The system explained
What Is a Ductless Mini-Split System?
A ductless mini-split is a heating and cooling system that requires no ductwork. It has two components: a compact indoor air handler that mounts on your wall or ceiling, and an outdoor compressor unit. The two connect through a small 3-inch hole in the wall — no tearing out walls, no running duct through your attic or floors.
Modern mini-splits are heat pumps — they both heat and cool efficiently year-round. In summer they pull heat out of your home to cool it. In winter they extract heat from outside air — even in temperatures well below freezing — and bring it inside. New England winters are no problem for today's cold-climate mini-split systems.
Single-zone vs. multi-zone
A single-zone system connects one outdoor compressor to one indoor air handler, serving one room or area. A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to up to five indoor units in different rooms — each with its own independent temperature control. You only condition the spaces you're actually using, which is why mini-splits are significantly more energy-efficient than whole-home forced air systems.
Is a mini-split right for your home?
Mini-splits are the ideal solution for:
- Homes with no existing ductwork
- Room additions and home offices
- Finished basements and attic conversions
- Rooms with persistent hot or cold spots
- Garages and workshops
- Sunrooms and three-season rooms
- Replacing window units with a cleaner solution
- Supplementing an older central HVAC system
